Maddox’s Journey

June 18, 2023

It’s Adam’s first Father’s Day!

While the day started with some tough news it ended with such joy. We found out in the morning that Maddox is pancreas insufficient. This is very common in Cystic Fibrosis and basically means his body can’t naturally create the enzymes needed to absorb nutrients from the food he’s eaten. Luckily, we can give him enzymes every time he eats to help with this. So today he got his first round of them (through a spoonful of applesauce!). The NICU staff gathered around to witness this, they have never seen NICU babies have anything but milk (but my baby is special and is going straight to solid foods!). He did great and took them like a champ. We will continue to work with him on this as this will be a big part of his every day CF journey.

Okay, let’s get to the good stuff. Our Maddy boy gained 30 grams (woo!) and most importantly, he drank a whole bottle on his own. We, along with the NICU nurses, were celebrating. This is a huge milestone as it gets us closer to closer to him being able to feed on his own which means he can leave this place sooner. That was the best Father’s Day gift Adam could ask for.

The day ended just perfectly with snuggles and a good Father’s Day book with daddy. Today we are choosing to bask in the good, and not to worry about what’s ahead. There is just so much to celebrate.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will worry about itself.”

  2. He is one strong little boy! He just wants to get bigger and stronger to play ball with his dad! You both are handling this journey so well. Love the daily reports on little Maddy!
