Maddox’s Journey

June 24, 2023

·

The end is in sight. Maddox is continuing to make progress and if everything continues to be stable with no crazy events we should be out of here in a matter of days. So if you’re reading this and you’ve been praying, pray specifically for a boring next few days! No episodes, steady temperatures, good feedings, and weight gain.

Gosh, he’s so precious!

We have been able to incorporate salts in his diet as is recommended for CF patients (see earlier post for more information). We have been sprinkling in a little bit of salt with each enzyme and applesauce mixture before he eats (also more information in earlier post). He’s doing so well. We are praying he continues to be such a good sport about this as this can become troublesome for some newborns, but he takes his salty applesauce like a champ! We continue to be in awe of his fighting spirit already shining through.

It would be really easy to get downcast and disappointed about Maddox’s CF and all of the extra treatments we have to do for his every day. It could feel like “extra steps” or a burden. It would be easy to complain and compare. Other babies can just eat when they’re hungry – he needs enzymes and supplements every single time. Other babies don’t need chest PT twice a day. Other babies don’t need extra vitamins in his milk in the morning. Other babies don’t need clinic visits and constant testing. He does. It’s just who he is. Adam and I have been working on transforming these moments of drudgery to delight. We want to delight in the fact we get to care for our son. Every time we do his treatments or go to appointments we are working on giving up our disappointments and being selfless and serving our child. We get the privilege of serving Maddox and that’s what God has called us to do. So, when we’re struggling with enzymes or doing chest PT on a fussy baby, we will remember to do it all through love and pure sacrifice to him and our savior. Soon he will be taking his own pills and doing his own treatment, not relying on us at all. We’re taking it moment by moment, whatever his sweet little body requires, we are providing that for him and serving his needs.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
– 1 Peter 4:10

“That’s what God has called us to do.” That’s the crux of it for sure. In our special needs journey, that was the turning point for me of surrender. Well said. Continuing to pray he comes home soon. 💕

I read this verse yesterday and thought of you.
Psalm 73:36. My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
